Messy workspaces, clean workspaces, bed workspaces, desk workspaces. Does any of it matter?
To be honest, it’s all relative, and it’s all subjective. What might work for one may not work for another. The key is to find what works best for you.
For some, mess gives people the ability to be more creative than they would be if they were working at a neat and tidy desk. A journal for the Association for Psychological Science published in 2014 in Minnesota, showed what many of us have been saying all along: messy people are simply more creative. According to the psychological scientist who carried out the experiment, Kathleen Vohs, “Being in a messy room led to something that firms, industries, and societies want more of: Creativity”. What else did they get from the experiment? “Disorderly environments seem to inspire breaking free of tradition, which can produce fresh insights, whereas orderly environments, in contrast, encourage convention and playing it safe.”
So, the more neat and tidy your workspace is, the more likely you are to play it safe when it comes to the work you do. There’s nothing wrong with that, though. The study also found that those with clean desks had a habit of eating healthier than those with a messy desk, so there’s definitely an advantage there.
We know plenty of people who use their bed as a workspace. We also know people who go to cafes to get their work done. Regardless of the location, you need to decide the pros and cons of where it is. If it’s in a cafe, will it be too loud, leading to distraction? If it’s in your bed, will you feel as though your work and personal lives are separated enough? If it’s at a desk in a separate room, will it be deafeningly quiet to the point of you going crazy? These are things to consider before choosing a place to work outside of work hours.
There’s always add-ons. The stationery, the coffee, the paper. Try to make sure the add-ons don’t turn into distractions. The stationery could be a great way to stay organized, but it could also lead to fidgeting and fiddling around with all the little bits and pieces instead of getting work done. Yes, procrastinator, we’re looking at you! The coffee is great for a pick-me-up, but too much will make you jittery and unable to sit still. And the paper?
