Sang is the man! I first came in as a walk in and he was accommodating, super funny, professional, and delivered a perfect cut. I've come back a few times since and Sang has stayed consistent in all of these areas each time. I've been going to Modern Man for about a year now and I love it. I love the atmosphere of the shop on Alberta. My favorite part is how it feels like you're walking into a 1920's saloon. Chase is my favorite barber here. He's great and does a good job! I see myself coming here, as long as I live in Portland.

I had searched Portland high and low for a barber shop that is one point and the search stopped the moment I discover Modern Man Barber Shop ( it was not even open yet). Don't know how they can take the time to treat each customer like a gentleman, offer up a decent selection of whiskey and beer, and maintain such a professional staff, without charging more. There's no need to get a Highlife and a 50/50 chance at a decent hair cut from the other guys. I'm hooked.

I went into the modern man with a year and half of hair growth, about 9", and no idea of how I wanted my cut. After talking with my barber we came up with some great ideas and he gave me a style that I am really pleased with! The atmosphere waiting was also amazing with a beer or whiskey and some nice 50's music playing in the background. If you're looking for a stylish cut, look no further. I will be getting my hair cut here again!

The day was outstanding and adding a visit to Modern Man was a large part of it. My son and I stopped in for the works, haircut, shave, washing of what hair I have left and then a nice cigar and a shot of whiskey in the lounge area upstairs afterward. The gentlemen there know what they're doing and do it all very well. We have already made reservations for next month and plan to bring a friend with us. It's like something you'd only read of others doing. You should try it for yourself.

I really did enjoy the modern man, it's the kind of atmosphere men need in a world becoming well, less manly. I was telling cory, who was phenomenal, women have their spas, and what do men have? More of this needs to happen. The only damper on the whole thing was I forgot to ask for the military discount, and so that was a bit of a bummer when I was later told exactly what the discount was. Other than that 10 out of 10 and would absolutely recommend to all my friends.

Within a few minutes, I was in the chair and the capable hands of Kalani. He had some recommendations for my cut and ended up delivering a new style that I am extremely satisfied with. For years I've gone to places that I can get my haircut + tip for $20 or less. There was always something that I'd have to fix once I got home. Sang's attention to detail was amazing! He gave me exactly the cut I wanted for the first time in years. I wish I could afford to make the Hot Towel Straight Razor Shave a weekly experience. It is the closest I've ever had! An excellent experience in a great atmosphere! I'm never going anywhere else!

I've been getting my hair cut by Sang for about a year now and he's consistently the best barber I've found. I recently brought my 14-month old son to get his hair cut too. Sang was patient and despite my son moving around quite a bit, Sang did a great job and most importantly, no blood was spilled. I highly recommend Modern Man and Sang specifically.

Just spent an enjoyable hour at the Modern Man on Alberta where Chase Danielle, who may be one of the best stylists in all of Oregon, made me look good. The complimentary whisky was tasty also. But first and foremost, Chase gave me a stellar cut - the kind of 'do' where people stop you in the street to tell you how good you look. What more can you ask for? The atmosphere of this barber shop is amazing. When you first walk in people greet you, asking if you want something to drink or a cigar to smoke. Cory is my go to guy, he has been cutting my hair for about 6 months, always leave happy with my hair cut. This is the only place I trust to get my hair cut at any more. Everyone else that cut's hair does an amazing job from what I have seen also. Highly recommend this establishment.

Second time getting my hair cut at the modern man. First time was at the Hawthorne location, thought I would go to the original. No complaints from either, fair prices (low if you include the cost of a drink and a cigar), and up right people running the joint. They are good to their customers and even the community-If you have an interview coming up and are strapped, they will clean you up. Just come back when you can.

I was reluctant to pay for a haircut, as I haven't done so in about 10 years. I decided to go to Modern Man mostly due to the free whiskey, I'll admit. But I absolutely don't regret it. Mikey took care of me, and he was a pretty chill guy. We talked about music (he recognized the band on my shirt), and then he got the barber next to us involved in the conversation, too. Fantastic conversation, great hair cut, free whiskey. I think I'll be much less reluctant to pay for haircuts from now on!

These guys know how to give a proper haircut. I usually go to Bishops. I recently changed over because Bishops was full so I walked across the street to give it a chance. I was greeted with a bourbon of my choice and a great haircut. After they gave me a cigar. The atmosphere is great. A great place for a dude to get a cut. The hot foam neck cut with a razor was a nice touch. I will for sure be back.

Ok, I'll admit it. I don't *need* a barber. I keep my head shaved, and have done for years. I went in for what amounted to a ritual shave--hot towels, shave oil, a scalp massage and a straight razor round-up of my super-sized head. A job well done--a good shave with stimulating conversation, followed by a soothing cold towel rub down and after shave. An experience I plan to repeat from time to time, just for the value of the ritual.

Came in for a cut and beard line up and hands down one of the best experiences ever. Worth every penny so you won't be disappointed. Best haircut I've gotten in half a decade. The whiskey is a nice touch, and it's bracing to have a buffalo staring back at you while you're in the barber's chair, but the thing that really struck me about this place was how friendly and attentive everyone was. It definitely has that Portland niche feel to it, but it's a classy joint with plenty of perks. p.s. - I'd rather have a good whiskey over a skunky beer in a clear bottle any day of the week...just sayin'

I was a little hesitant, expecting elitism and snobbery, but received nothing but camaraderie and professionalism. I don't speak barber very well, but Sang knew exactly what I wanted, and my trust was rewarded with an absolutely stellar cut. Twenty-four + tip is a little pricey for me, but I'm convinced it's totally worth it.

I went and visited Eric Tillman at the modern man on Alberta and gave him minimal instruction, told him to go with his intuition and got a great cut. He has the softest touch (totally no homo) and the shop even gives you a free drink with a haircut! And they shave your ducking kneck for no extra $$. Definitely a good experience and recommended.

The service and attention to detail is the best I've found in PDX so far; combine that with a whiskey and a smoke and its hard to beat. I've been seeing Mikey Denton for almost a year now and he gets it. My friends have gone do other barbers and feel the same, which leads me to believe that that level of talent is all around. I also had a beard that was (exactly) 3 months along and looking fairly burly. Personally, I hate getting my hair cut, nothing's worse that sitting down in front of some emo-girl with a bunch of piercings asking me to describe it detail what I think is cool, and then leave with whatever their interpretation was. The guys at the Modern Man actually know what they're doing and take pride it their knowledge. In short, I didn't see one man leave the place not looking considerably better than when they went in. Corey ( hope I spelled it right ), my barber was awesome, the shop was everything I hoped for and the experience better than any barbershop I've been to. I love this place! My son Ryan got me hooked up as he gave me a gift certificate. I will never go anywhere else. Sang is my barber and while he dishes it out to me, I dish it back even more! Everyone there seems to like to banter, the atmosphere is fantastic! Owners are great and have it dialed. I love getting a shot of wiskey before my haircut and shave. Gotta love this place. An experience I wlways look forward to!

I had a great experience at Modern Man. The whole concept could have been too painfully hip, except that everyone there was incredibly laid back and friendly, and they know what they are doing. Mikey was my barber, and he understood how to work with my curls and cowlicks. I got a masculine, sharp haircut, enjoyed a Bulliet in the rocks, had good conversation, and left feeling new and improved. And the free cigar was decent. I think the experience raised my testosterone level! Highly recommend.

The shave was my first experience with a straight razor and I enjoyed it immensely. As for the cut... all the ladies in my life have been commenting on how good it looks ever since I got it.

The atmosphere is classy and comfortable with great music. Cory talked me through what I would need to do to get the style I wanted and meticulously giving me the best hair cut I've ever had. The straight razor neck shave to finish everything off was fantastic. Their prices are fair and affordable. No one else will ever be allowed to touch my hair.

i have been going to the Modern Man on Alberta ever since it opened, and love it's atmosphere. being possibly the only barbershop that offers whiskey as an alternative to a choice of beer for customers was an instant bonus (i'm allergic to yeast, hence no beer). the staff is extremely friendly and personable, making your experience one of hanging out with good friends who know how to make you feel good, not just look good.

Excellent barber, great haircut, good advice on what to get, and I'm more than pleased with the hair product I bought. My only regret is that I didn't sample the whiskey, since the sun wasn't yet over the yardarm, but I'll arrange my appointment for next time to correct that oversight.

The interior is awesomely old school barber shop, the staff is very friendly and talkative, and the barbers show an attention to detail that is unmatched by any other place I have been to. I took my groomsmen to The Modern Man before my wedding. We had a wonderful time hanging out while we each received straight razor shaves, haircuts, and styles. We then hung out at the bar upstairs while we waited for our gentlemen to finish. They were very accommodating to my party and I would return in a heartbeat.

I enjoyed my experience (i.e. Makers Mark upon entry and cigar after the haircut). I did not have to say anything more than "short on the sides and a bit off the top". I will have my hair cut at Modern Men Barber Shop as long as their doors are open. They have a great thing going on here. Also I do not have any friends that would choose "Banquet Beer" over Whiskey EVER.

This place is great, and the overall experience is top notch. Bourbon, great haircut, and a cigar. My barber was knowledgeable and gave me the best haircut I've had in a long time. The atmosphere is Portlandia but in a damn fine way. I've found a new regular spot. Can't wait for a straight razor shave next time.

The staff is friendly and articulate, no big screen TV sports to dull the nerves, but a nice mix of music to enhance the mood and spirit of the shop. The ambience is classic without the kitsch, the extras are great (a free drink and a smoke every visit), but the real bread and butter of this joint is the top-notch barbers. I'm a child of the 60s-70s and, while I've had everything from crew cuts to whatever the current trend is, my hair looks best when it's grown out a bit and over the ears. This place is great. If Ernest Hemingway and The Most Interesting Man in the World had a lovechild, this is where he'd get his hair cut. The atmosphere is winning and the staff are friendly, not in-your-face or aloof like the frat boy franchises or hipster shops founded on the drink-while-you-wait concept. After visiting a chain barbershop that charged nearly twice what they do for my last haircut (and didn't offer a cigar!), I think I've made my decision about all future trims.

I'm in my 40s and back when I was a kid the local barbershop was a total man cave. The Modern Man has a similar vibe only better: a glass of scotch before my cut, a far better haircut (when I was a kid - you'd often get teased the next day by friends by the damage done if you got the wrong barber on the wrong day), and a great straight razor shave (with some bay rum splashed on afterwards). This place is great.

I went to The Modern Man on my birthday to get a haircut with a friend. Everybody was very friendly and accommodating, and we both had a very good time. The bar upstairs has a great atmosphere and a good selection of whiskey: no cheap stuff. My barber cut my hair quickly and efficiently, and I am very pleased with the result. We both left with complimentary cigars that we smoked after dinner at my birthday party. I will certainly be going back for my next haircut.

i have fairly heavy facial hair and the shave was amazingly smooth. good hair cut. good bourbon. funny conversations. nice people. i would certainly go back. if you are planning a man's night, upstairs would be perfect party place, cards or bachelor party. check it out!

Had my first hot towel shave and it was awesome. From the moment i walked in I felt welcomed, had my bourbon then got a great shave. I grow a beard out each winter and my new tradition is going to be coming here to have to taken off each spring. Wasn't sure $24 for a shave would be worth it but it was, no doubt.

Having told my wife that it was my wish for a barber shop shave sometime, she gave me a gift certificate for the shave, whiskey and cigar the next time we got to Portland. I was lucky enough get my wish at Modern Man. They forgot my cigar but remembered the important part — the whiskey (good by the way - none of the cheap stuff). Sang Nguyen was terrific, told me what to expect, and gave me the closest shave I have ever had. As Arnold once said: "I'll be back."

I had a cut and a shave yesterday, and it was pretty good. Not as expensive as some places and more expensive than others. I have had worse cuts and paid more, and better cuts and paid less, but here is a good value. The chap was friendly. I realized that having another man massage my hair and rub my face is a strange feeling, and one I am not entirely comfortable with, so I probably won't be back, but that really is more about my preference, and not any sort of knock against this place.

I am pleased with my total experience at the shop on my very first visit. My son and I went there on his birthday after we had finished a delicious lunch and were both happy. My cut was perfectly executed, to my specifications. It was a joy to face away from the mirror and be included in the shop banter, from talking about the music playing to the experience of getting a tatoo and wondering where all the scantily dressed women were. My experience at the Modern Man Barber Shop and Gentleman's Supply was one of pure Bliss and Manlihood. The staff at Modern Man were excellent. Free drinks, good atmosphere, friendly and polite. The only reason for not giving 5:stars was the barber giving me my haircut was precessing rather hard with his electric trimming clippers (around the ears and along the neck). It was rather uncomfortable. His clippers may have needed sharpening.. I don't know. My bad for not saying anything at the time. The end result was great, but a little painful in getting there.

When I walked in for my appointment, I was immediately greeted by the entire shop as Frank Sinatra played in the background & asked what I'd like for my complementary drink. The Makers Mark Kentucky whisky was smooth going down as I sat for the best haircut I've had in a long time. My barber, Sang, did a great job with the straight razor shave & took the time to get every rough spot smooth. It was all topped off by a complementary cigar when I left. Thanks guys! This place is legit! I brought my man in for a haircut and shave. He thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Even though we live an hour away, we will definitely be visiting this place regularly. The owners are right there overseeing everything and visiting with customers. The barbers are highly skilled and very friendly. I was very please with my experience at the Modern Man. I arrived early and was greeted with a glass of Maker's Mark neat. While I enjoyed my libation I perused some of the man friendly reading material. My barber, Ryan, was polite and friendly and provided a top notch haircut and neck shave. Frank Sinatra and Johnny Cash were playing throughout. After jumping around from barber to barber, I've finally found a place to call my own. I look forward to going back for my next cut!

The Modern Man did a wonderful job of being down to earth, professional, and providing quality work. I got one of the best straight razor shaves ever (they usually irritate my skin, but this one didn't at all). In addition, everyone there was very friendly and welcoming...and you can't beat a place that starts you off with a shot of Makers Mark! I just wished I lived closer to go back more often.

What a treat, and within walking distance of our home/office! If you grew up in the 1960s or 70s, or even if you didn't, there's a casual, classy, deja-vue kind of ambience here that you just don't find in most hair shops these days. My barber was Dave, a great conversationalist who knows his craft. And they offered me a shot of bourbon or a beer, nice touch. I don't smoke cigars, but that was offered as well on my way out. I will definitely be back!

The guys were great, the cut was great, and it isn’t often that I get to enjoy the smokey flavors of Johnnie Walker Red Label while enjoying a close shave. I will be making this my go to place for a shave and cut. Thanks guys! And thanks Bubba, it’s a great cut.
