    Good Experience

    Teren creates a welcoming environment in the salon. She gave my curls a snazzy cut, and when I had a case of the day-afters - darn curls, always going their own way! - quickly got me in for a touch-up. Would certainly recommend and will be back.

    FINALLY FOUND A STYLIST I REALLY LIKE

    After about 3 years after a terrible experience at a salon I finally decided I need to get something done about my hair. I saw a lot of good reviews about Urban Roots so decided to give them a try. Three word review- TEREN IS AWSOME.

    Great experience!

    Teren was a great hairstylist. She was patient, friendly and responsive to feedback, even asking while she cut if it was going as I had hoped. She would stop to check in with me and let me mess my hair around to make sure the cut fell right. The space was clean and cozy and very inviting. As I left she let me know that I could call her back if I got a case of the "day afters" and needed it fixed. Great professional customer service and a fabulous cut. I will be going back!

    Thank you Teren!

    I am so in love with my new hair color by Teren! She made me just the right shade of red, and I couldn't be happier with it. I loved the intimate feel of the salon, and getting to really chat and hang out with my stylist- all while getting pampered with new color. She is a really great stylist, super friendly and professional, and I would recommend her to anyone in the bay.

    Good cuts, no fuss

    I have had good cuts from both Lisa and Teren. I appreciate that they keep an easy atmosphere and don't have any of the attitude you find at some salons. Definitely recommended.

    Lisa is awesome!

    I am grey-free... all thanks to Teren! Couldn't ask for more. Service was prompt, comfortable, and amazing. She matched my color without any trouble, and I received tons of compliments about my hair for the entire weekend! Right on! I found my new hair place! Woot woot!

    Just what I needed

    I had gone WAY too long without seeing anyone since moving to SF, was pleased to walk out of Urban Roots with a great cut and whole new outlook on life! Lisa listened to my concerns and gave me some amazing tips. Will be venturing back to SOMA after the new year for my follow up :)

    Teren loves hair and hair LOVES Teren.

    At least my hair does. If that doesn't say enough: I had a very adventurous idea about what I wanted to do with my hair. Teren was amazing about talking it through, and ultimately giving her expert advice on what would work much better. And it did. Prior to Teren I had the same hair dresser for six years, who was also extremely skilled. . .but I had a unique experience at Urban Roots and will definitely go back for Teren's Touch!

    Lisa is fantastic with color!

    For 6+ yrs, Lisa has done a beautiful job with my color. She's great at brainstorming ideas, knowing what will & won't work with my hair & skin color, and then consistently nailing it! I get compliments all the time, even when I'm way overdue for an appt (think roots & seriously washed out color). I can't tell you how many times, 8 wks after my last appt, people say "Wow, did you just get your hair done? The color looks great!" *That's* how good Lisa is with color.

    I heart Lisa

    When I moved to SF six years ago, I was very nervous - would be any hair-conscious gal - about finding the right stylist to complement my new life.     Wonderful Experience

    I am a travel nurse and always have trouble finding people to cut my unruly curly hair.It actually causes me anxiety.I found Lisa on yelp and she had wonderful reviews so I decided to come to urban roots.She cut my hair exactly the way I imagined.I told her her I wanted the Mia farrow's hair from Rosemarry's Baby and she delivered.If I had the money, I would fly her wherever I am at to cut my hair.I will miss her.

    Great Salon

    I met with Lisa and she was able to squeeze me in on short notice and on a sunday. I'd just moved to the city and desperately needed someone to do my hair. She was personable and so gentle with my hair. She was fast and it was nice because I got personal attention and she wasn't working on a bunch of other people at the same time, it was just me and her. I will definitely be back to see Lisa!

    Men's hair

    Lisa was great with assessing what I needed because I had no clue! To clarify, I have an abundance of very thick straight hair. This was the first time I've ever grown it long; consequently, this was the first time I needed it cut. Or as Lisa put it, "shaped." I don't have another experience to compare to, but I can attest that the experience was pleasant. Assuming I keep my hair long, I will repeat. Men, if your hair requires more than a buzz and a snip at the barbershop, try out Urban Roots.

    Never a bad cut

    Lisa cut my long hair short and gave me a great style. She's able to work with my difficult wavy hair and I've never had a bad cut with her - short or long. She even cut my 3 year old's curly hair and it looks great.

    Job well done

    I have curly hair, and it's been tough for me to find the right person. Well not any more, I found her. Lisa did a great job, and even 'squeezed' in my four year old for a little banes' snipping. She's very professional, and super nice. I can't recommend her enough!

    Great hair stylist!

    I had my hair twisted and cut by Lisa and I love it! She was great company and the salon is so very peaceful and pleasant to be in. She is really knowledgeable about natural hair and functional and cute ways to care for it. It was an uplifting experience for me after searching a while to find a hair dresser that could do natural hair styles. So many people complimented me on the hairstyle and the products she used smell so great. I will definitely be back.

    I am new @Urban Roots & already I have 2thumbs up. I was referred by Lisa to April and she is top notch! It is rare to find a stylist that cares about the history of your hair, what works & what didn't. I have relaxed hair & in being cautious I just requested a wash/ trim& flatiron. My fears are gone & I'm going back for all my other hair needs. & the shop is Xtra Cute.

    Amazing Cut

    Lisa totally lived up to all the great reviews. She talked me through everything she was going to do, and made me feel super comfortable with cutting off a lot of my hair. I decided to go natural and stop doing the brazilian blowouts, so I showed up with a mix of kinky roots and straight ends and she hooked me up. The cut looks great, and I've been getting several compliments a day. Plus she gave me tons of tips to maintain it!

    Totally Satisfied

    Lisa was excellent! I have natural hair that desparately needed some attention. Lisa colored, cut and styled my hair and it's been easy to manage and the compliments haven't stopped since I walked out of the shop. I've been in many salons and I give this one 5 stars -- great service!

    Friendly and knowledgeable hairdresser!

    I have never considered myself a "hair person" so I'm always looking for someone to help me look great in the least amount of time. Often hairdressers don't feel good about sending me out with my natural hairdo and end up doing something elaborate to my hair which I will or could never do myself. Lisa is super knowledgeable about all hair textures and is all about giving tips and tricks that get me up, out and looking good in no time. I truly appreciate that!

    Lisa is the Best!

    I have been getting my hair cut by Lisa for about 8 years. She is very reliable and laid back. Urban roots is her own studio, so you don't have to worry about unnecessary overhead or unorganized staff. She is great with color and highlights, she listens to what kind of cut you want, and her haircuts grow out very nicely. I hope I can go to Urban Roots for another 8 years!

    A lovely salon

    Found my new hair home :)

    Anyone who's ever gotten a bad haircut knows what it's like to finally find someone who really knows how to cut hair. This happened to me. I'd decided to cut off all my relaxed hair and go natural. Unfortunately the 1st place I went to left me wanting to hide in a cave. I scheduled an appt 2 days later with April at Urban Roots and she knew exactly how to cut my curly hair. She transformed the bad haircut into something amazing. The compliments keep rolling in and I LOVE my new hairdo!

    cool new 'do

    Lisa took me from shaggy to sleek with a razor cut that is balanced, but not too coiffed. My hair is straight and she took my vague directions and created a new look. Getting lots of compliments. Lisa is warm but not shallow and it was a highly peaceful, positive experience.

    Saving grace!

    Lisa was phenomenal! If only I lived in sf! I had a Ouidad cut once (walked out with a fro from rake and shake). Lisa gave me a great cut with shape and uses my natural curl, used the technique of cream (not gel), no friction, formed little clumps and twist! It works great! I will need to return soon! I was even able to recreate the next day! And she is not in the business of selling products!! The salon is 2 chairs and off the beaten path. Super great experience.

    Ex-Pat New Yorker Finds Happy Haircut @ Urban Roots

    I came to Lisa after reading other great reviews about her work on curly hair and I was not disappointed. LOVE my new cut & color. Was a Ouidad customer in NYC for years and needed someone who knows how to deal with curls -- believe me, if you have curlly hair you know how hard this is. Other bonuses: if you hate pretentious salons then this is the place for you. Cozy, friendly BS-free atmosphere.

    Highly recommended

    I've trusted Lisa with my hair for five years, since I moved to San Francisco, and I wouldn't go anywhere else. She's seen me through lots of different cuts and strikes the perfect balance: she has ideas and suggestions but also doesn't try to push her clients into something they're not comfortable with. She is also such a warm person and I always look forward to seeing her. Urban Roots makes me thankful that there are some things in life that are just effortlessly perfect (at least on my part).

    best cut ever

    i've lived in the city for 7 years and hadn't found anyone that could actually cut my curly hair, in spite of what they would tell me over the phone... until now. i walked in and lisa and april immediately had a vision for how my hair should look and how it should be cut. lisa hooked it up and its never been fresher :) Advice from someone thats been to all others in the city- if you have curly hair go no where else.

    Lisa and April have been really good to my hair and I!

    The first time I went to Urban Roots I had my hair cut by Lisa and she for sure knows how to cut and deal with curly hair and the second time I got my hair cut by April and she was awesome. She taught me how to style and control the beast lol! I love urban roots the cuts are great and they know what they are doing, never again will I go to another salon!

    I love the hair cut and the hairdresser! Lisa was great, paid attention to my hair needs and gave great advice. i will go back! But, next time I will request using other hair products. The redkin products really dried out my scalp and didn't hold my curl.

    Amazing environment and impeccable service

    The locations was centrally located and easy parking. The salon is such has a hip urban feel. My stylist was amazing. She gave great advise and a wonderful haircut. I'm definitely going back. I've been searching for a salon since I came here in March and this one has a great vibe.

    Becoming A Loyal Customer

    This is my second time going, and I'm really happy with the results so far. I've gotten two great haircuts and color by Lisa, who both really listens to what you want and will also give her professional and honest opinion. Her home girl and fellow stylist, April is also a hoot. Together, they bring warmth and fun to the place. Please note: the salon is not in the greatest of neighborhoods and it's a bit small, but it's cozy and clean. l also need a better shampooing to my scalp and hair

    Best Haircut Ever!

    I am not exaggerating. I have curly hair and this is by far the best haircut I've even gotten. Looks good washed, not washed - Lisa is my savior! It looks just as good now (2 weeks later) as the day she did it and I am a very low maintenance person. The salon is small and personal. I really enjoyed my conversation with Lisa, and didn't feel the need to make superficial small talk. I live in Philly and plan on making sure I see Lisa every trip i make to SF! Thank you!

    Great hair cut

    Lisa knows hair. She's able to cut my wavy hair in great short or long styles that others have butchered before. I only get my hair cut a few times a year since I live 3 hours away, but my hair grows out nicely in between. I'd recommend lisa to anyone.

    Loved It!!!!

    Best experience I've ever had at any salon I've ever been to!! I went in to get my mini chop and was nervous at first but my stylist, Lisa Holt made me feel very secure and confident about doing it. She walked me through everything she was doing and also gave me advice about how to take care of my hair and how to embrace my new natural. Everyone was very friendly and very professional. I felt like I received 5 star service for a 3 star price. I will definitely be going back! I love my hair!

    BEST HAIRDRESSER IN SAN FRAN

    I may be biased but whatever I ask for , I get when it comes to my hair and Lisa is a wonderful person as well, so nice to chat with always! I understand she laso does up-does for wedding etc. and many commercial shoots in the Bay area. Very talented! Her salon is in a historical bldg that is fun to visit for those that appreciate architecture and history.

    I don't get my hair cut very often, but when I do, I go to Lisa. She is amazing. She works quickly, gives you lots of great feedback if the look you're going for will work or not, and is just a very pleasant person.     April rocks!

    Had a very pleasant time with April getting a cut that fit my hair texture. She has very nice hair herself and manages it nicely so she was an inspiration to me.     The stylist I've been waiting for!

    I never gotten my hair done by Lisa yet. I went for advice on growing out my hair. I wanted to get it done but I've been having hair issues. She told me to handle the problem of what's causing my hair problems. Most sylists that I've gone to would just take me in and not care about what's causing my hair to fall out, but Lisa seemed to really care. I felt she understood me. When my hair get's longer I will be going to her.

    The Best.

    Lisa always always does the best with my hair. I live far away so sometimes I have to get my haircut from someone else and they never do it right because I have curly hair and ends up looking a mess a week later. Lisa gets it right and the second I leave the salon I get a million compliments on my hair and the shape lasts months. There is just a difference when Lisa does it... Love it! So glad I found her. My sister and one of my best friends go to her now.

    Finally!

    I have consistently gone to the same 2 stylists (one when i in socal and 1 now that I live here) over the past 6 years. (LoyaIty issues) I always go in with an open mind and flexibility - and always leaving feeling disappointed and ugly. Lisa heard me and made me look good. She didn't get carried away with scissors (the past 2 girls took a razor to my hair and seemed to loose control). She was honest about what would flatter me. I am completely happy with my cut an color. Yay!

She still gave me a great cut. I probably liked it better the day after, and when I washed it on my own, which is even better, since that is the cut that I have to live with every day.

    A True Artist

    My sister told me to contact Lisa as soon as she had her first appointment with her. It took me awhile to warm up to going to a new hair stylist but I finally took the plunge and thank goodness I did. I had a wonderful experience from booking my appointment all the way to the first time I had to wash and comb my own hair afterward. I can't believe I came out of her studio looking better than I had hoped I could. So now Lisa has 2 members of my family that are faithful customers. :)

    Search No Further!

    Lisa is simply the best! I have to admit I am a little crazy about my hair (some might call it obsessive).     Amazing!

    I have been afraid to have my hair cut in a saloon for years because in the past hair stylists haven't listened to me and have cut too much off.     Finally found what I am looking for!!

    I recently moved to SF and after three hairsylists who came highly recommended, I decided to try Urban Roots. I went up to a girl at a party with curly hair and asked her who her stylist was, and that was the end of the beginning. I finally found a stylist who not only knows how to cut curly, thick hair, but also knows how to color!! Lisa did an incredible job in coloring and cutting my hair, and she made it all look so easy. I would highly recommend her to anyone, and already have.

    Lisa is a wonderful hair dresser. She is talented in both cutting and chemical process. My hair can be difficult to work with, but Lisa always does a fabulous job.     Lisa is the only person on the face of this planet who cuts my hair EXACTLY the way I like it. She's also colored my hair some beautiful shades of brown which I will also go back for.     Great Experience

    Lisa said yes when everyone else said no. I wanted purple highlights, yes, purple, so after I was told that it would not be possible due to the years and years of dying my hair all sorts of ways. I did not give up and I found Lisa! She gave me my highlights along with a great haircut and I have really curly hair. I could tell that she knew what she was doing and her experience shows when she talks about hair and when she is actually cutting your hair. Will totally be back.

    She's good with scissors!

    I'm an African American woman and I went to Lisa for a relaxer and a cut. Lisa did a pretty good job with the relaxer. My major complaint is that she only washed my hair 3 times, and my hair was still dirty after she washed it. But Lisa redeemed herself with her haircutting skills. I had hair about two inches past my shoulders, and I decided to get a bob. The cut is FANTASTIC and everyone loves it! I'd definetely go back to Lisa to get my hair cut!

    Never fails to deliver

    I've been seeing Lisa now since October 2008 and I have never gone to anyone else since. She does a fantastic job and seems to know just what I want in a cut and color. She has helped find a shade that works for me and even if I can't get in to see her right away I will wait for weeks even an extra month because she is totally worth it. It doesn't hurt that the studio is private and she is so much fun to talk to. She is the BEST. Reasonably priced and worth every cent!

    Just what I needed!

    Lisa doesn't know this, but I had a breakup the day before my first visit with her. I had gotten an email confirmation about an appointment I'd made with her two months ago and promptly forgot about. They say you shouldn't get a haircut when you're emotional, but I was like, "I'm going!" I'm so glad I did because she knows hair so well, particularly my hair, which is wavy brunette hair with cowlicks. So symbolic, getting rid of all that old stuff. Plus I look super hot.

    Love my hair!!

    That is something I haven't been used to saying for a while, but Lisa changed it all. I absolutely love my hair cut, its sophisticated and funky at the same time! Being of mixed race and having really thick, curly hair I have never had some one know exactly how to cut and style my hair.     I loved my experience at the Urban Roots Hair Studio! It was my first time getting my hair done by Lisa and my first time trying a different hairstyle so I was a bit hesitant at first.     After reading so many incredible reviews on yelp, I couldnt resist making an appointment! Not only is Lisa super sweet and kind, she listens really well and figured out a hairdo that fit both my fashion style and my lifestyle. I was completely comfortable, laughing and happy the whole time and my husband and 11 month old baby had a blast !     I scheduled an appointment with Lisa after reading the stellar reviews she received on Yelp. Although I had to wait just over a month, it was totally worth it. Not only did she give me a fabulous cut (the only one I've ever really been completely happy with), but gave me some great tips. Consi dering this was my first haircut since moving to SF from LA, I was a bit nervous about visiting a new stylist. I felt very comfortable as soon as I walked into her charming, cozy space. A true gem!

    Really impressive

    I came in with a rat's nest of a grown out perm and she expertly shaped my hair into very cute short do. It's a great cut that looks good no matter which way i wear it - straight or curly, and I've been getting raves on it.     Worth a 4 hour flight from Chicago

    No one knows my hair like Lisa; so when I knew I was coming to town on business, the first thing I did was to book an appointment at Urban Roots. I have limp fine hair that occasionally goes frizzy in humid weather - the kind of hair that would otherwise require daily punishment with a blow drier, flat iron, etc. But when Lisa styles my hair, I can wear it natural and feel confident that it looks good. If I could only convince her to move to Chicago until I finish school!

    Lisa is a gifted stylist who has an uncanny knack for not only sensing what you want for your hair but the rare ability to actually give you that style. I have extremely curly--read unmanageable--hair. When Lisa and I spoke she immediately knew what I wanted. What a pleasant change! I am very happy with my cut.     Love my new look

    I was impressed at Lisa's speed and intuitive ability to give you the hair style that you want and one that looks best on you. I came in with picture in hand, yet I never actually had to take it out. I simply told her that I wanted to grow my hair and she proceed to cut and styled my hair, just like I wanted without ever seeing the photo. I had a wonderful time as we talked about everything under the sun. i'm definitely going back and am happy to say I finally found my stylist!

    Lisa was pleasant and easy to communicate with about what I wanted. I'm pleased with the outcome. I would do 5 stars but am reserving a bit a judgement to see how my hair reacts after a few weeks of growth because that usually where I have a problem. But loving how it looks now and very appreciative of her attention and skill with my cut.

    Drastic!

    I have to say I've never felt more comfortable getting all my hair chopped off as I was in Lisa's chair. I went from below shoulder-length to the Rihanna pixie, and in one short hour, I was transformed....AND LOVING IT!!! Thank you Lisa, and I wish you all the best with your shop.

    Lisa has been doing my hair since I moved to San Francisco. She does my sister's hair, my brother in law's hair, and my brother in law's sister's hair... not to mention numerous friends. She does a great job, and really listens to her clients. She is honest and up front about what will work for you, and by the time you are out of the chair you will be totally converted.     Urban Roots and Lisa Are Fantastic

    Lisa is awesome! She is so down to earth, easy and lovely to talk with and listens to hair wants/needs. Lisa is an expert with curly hair. The only stylist whose cut makes my curls much more manageable. And her salon is great, too...very relaxing atmosphere and in a cool, old brick builidng. No uppity, busy salon here...yea!

    I'm conceited...

    That's probably what people thought of me after Lisa cut my hair. I kept staring at myself in the mirror, tossing my hair, doing that sexy come hither look over my shoulder where my bangs fall over my left eye. Lisa is extraordinary! She gave me EXACTLY what I wanted and then some! She knows what she's talking about and is very friendly and personable. I'm soooo glad that I went to see her. I'm definitely going back!     Lisa is Awesome!!!

    As an African American woman who has recently moved to SanFrancisco I had a really hard time finding someone who knew how to take care of my hair in my neighborhood. Fortunately I found Lisa on Yelp. She's a great person and a great stylist. I got my hair cut and colored on my first visit and I just got it relaxed this time.     Excellent!

    Lisa is warm and personable. She pays attention to what you tell her about your hair and how much time you want to spend dealing with it every day. I walked out with a completely new style (about 6 inches shorter) and a great hair cut!

    no magic

    I think those people are OVER rated. There IS NO magic. I asked her TO CHANGE THE style but KEEP THE LENGTH. EXCEPT LAYER OUT, she didn't change anything but right side and left side became different. Right side layers are not smooth; above the ear part is too short and on the ear is thin. So, look like " h " letter on the right side. I couldn't see it AT THE saloon COS' my hair was wet with hair product. I don't want TO be negative, but I am asked FOR my experience AND it IS mine.

    Lisa is a godsend. From the moment you walk in Lisa is working with you and you only. She's sweet and easy going and makes you feel totally comfortable. She absolutely knows what she's doing and she's a star with haircuts. I love my cut and might even do a little color. If you have curly hair and relax it.     Looking Younger!

    Lisa's off the hook! After getting a cut and color yesterday, i was told by a fellow dancer that i am looking younger and younger. Now tell me...what can beat that? Besides my stylish 'do', Lisa presence creates an atmosphere of calm, unpretentious, earthly hipness where you can just relax in comfortable simplicity.     Excellent Haircut!

    My hair looks beautiful, and Lisa was very entertaining! i will definitely be back--I just need to remember to book well in advance. I only wish that the studio was located in an area with a better parking situation.

    Consistent Care for Curls

    Lisa has cut and colored or a few years now (I followed her from her old salon). She is able to style my curly hair so that it feels natural and is easy to care for. With three months between cuts, its a testament to her styling that I still get compliments on my hair right up to when I'm due for a cut again.     Best bangs and cut ever!

    So I went to Lisa wanting to get a completely whole new look. She listened to my ideas and also suggested a few tips for me. I told Lisa I wanted to get bangs "a la Heidi Klum style on season 4 of Project Runway." I haven't had bangs since I was like 5 years old so I was a little nervous on how I would look. Nevertheless, now I look so stylish that people don't even recognize me at first!

    Lisa was amazing from the moment I stepped into her door. Her personality really shines through. She sat me down & discussed with me what I wanted of my hair.     Lisa is a treasure! She is a talented hair stylist and was the first to notice new curls that appeared in my hair at 61 years old! She can work with people of all ages and brings out the best in you. I look forward to my appointments. We talk about all kinds of things - travel, movies, family stories, etc and laugh a lot. I like the intimacy of the salon and the brick walls too. Lisa has a gentle touch but give a strong scalp massage.

    Finaly! Lisa really listens to what you have to say about your hair and when you're done telling her everything she starts cutting your hair. From the result you know that she really listens. My hair is very dificult for me and my hairdressers but Lisa is one of few that manages it. I'm very happy with my cut.

    WANNA FEEL AND LOOK LIKE A MILLION DOLLARS

    Everytime I leave Urban Roots Hair Studio, I feel and look like a million dollars. The atmosphere is bodily warm. You have the choice of resting your eyes as Lisa beautifies you , or you can have interesting conversations with Lisa. She is a very good listener, and she is also full of laughter. It is very therapeutic for me while I am at Urban Roots Hair Studio. My dreadlocks look so nicely locked when I leave Urban Roots,. When I walk down the street people ask me who does my hair.

    Finally!

    After 3 years in the city, I finally found someone to cut my hair. I had horrible experiences before, walking out of a salon looking like Dora (!?!) Lisa is great! We talked a lot before she even touched the scissors, about what I wanted, what I didn't wanted (Dora haircut). She is a good listener and added her own touch to my hair cut. I Love it!     Lisa rocks

    Urban roots is an intimate, adorable space in which Lisa, the owner, works alone, one customer at a time. Since there is already a 2 week-minimum wait to see her I am loathe to make her more popular; however, I have to say that her work is great, her style current and the one-on-one experience she offers is unique and quite relaxing. In one session she took me from blah to wow. No kidding- I'm a customer for life. Love her.

    Talented, contemporary and completely down to earth

    I have never been disappointed by Urban Roots and I am now a faithful client (as is my daughter of 5) -- there have been many salons where I have been left crushed by the cut AND penniless! Lisa transforms my hair, which is mostly flat and fine but blessed by really weird random curves. Lisa leaves me looking great and talks me through ways to put it up that are fabulous - and she does not leave me penniless!

    Fabulous

    I'm African with relaxed hair, I'm new to the city and I've noticed there seems to be a distinct lack of good hairdressers in the city. Fret no more, Lisa is fantastic! My hair isn't the easiest to handle but she did a great job was so friendly and chatty I barely read my book. Stick a fork in me I'm done, i need never see a different hairdresser in the city again!

    Good cut!

    I don't like "beauty shops" but you have to get your hair cut. After I moved here recently, my daughter recommended Urban Roots. The shop is small so you get close attention. I got a wonderful cut! Easy to get to on the Muni, too.
